How Can We Address the Challenges of Using AI Ethically and Effectively in Education?

Transparency, equity, and the preservation of critical thinking must be given top priority in our human-centered, balanced approach to addressing the difficulties of using artificial intelligence (AI) in education in an ethical and successful manner. AI’s quick development is a double-edged sword: while it presents previously unheard-of possibilities for individualized, accessible education, if unchecked, it could widen social divides and jeopardize data privacy. Furthermore, it is essential to tackle the “black box” nature of AI by demanding explainable algorithms from developers. As Akgun and Greenhow (2022) argue, identifying and introducing ethical dilemmas to both teachers and students is vital for creating a future generation capable of navigating AI’s societal drawbacks.

AI should be used in conjunction with human instruction rather than in place of it to guarantee efficacy. The relational and emotional support that teachers provide is still the foundation of education, even though AI can automate administrative tasks and provide instant feedback (OpenLearning, n.d.). By striking a balance where AI manages data-driven personalization and human mentors support in-depth critical thinking and cooperative discussion, we can counteract the “cost of loneliness” and cognitive disengagement (Crawford et al., 2024). Lastly, ensuring that AI is a tool for inclusion rather than a catalyst for increased social inequality requires addressing the digital divide through equitable access. We can use AI to effectively and morally empower all students by fusing technical literacy with moral responsibility.
