Do young adults lack survival skills, or are we judging them based on outdated standards? I disagree with the statement. Critics often point out the lack of emotional resilience and interpersonal skills of young adults while overlooking the modern skills that they have mastered. Young adults today demonstrate high digital literacy, awareness of mental health and are resourceful with technology.
One of the most vital survival skills that young adults today possess are high digital literacy. This is because, they are able to navigate new technology and software with ease whether it is for socializing, work, or even entertainment. For example, they are able to solve problems by watching YouTube tutorials and are able to understand how data privacy works. Hence, young adults today are well-suited to tackle modern professional demands.
Secondly, young adults are aware of the importance of mental health. They understand that it is just as important as physical well-being. This is partly due to social media, where mental health awareness is spread openly and encouraging people to open up. This helps to reduce stigma on the subject. For example, young adults often seek therapy or counseling to help with their problems. Thus, this shows that young adults are more aware of the importance of mental health and are taking steps to protect it.
Thirdly, young adults are capable of utilizing the technology at their disposal. This is because they are able to use technology to solve problems, improve their skills which can help they professionally and achieve goals. For example, many young adults have started to use social media to generate income through online businesses and creating engaging content. Hence, this shows that young adults are capable of utilizing available technology to their advantage.
To conclude, young adults today do not lack survival skills, rather they are equipped with a different set of skills. They are digitally literate, aware of mental health and resourceful with technology. The assumption that young adults lack survival skills overlook the way they have adapted to the ever-evolving modern life. Rather than generalizing them, I recommend educators, employers and parents to support and strengthen their skills and help them develop through training and real-world opportunities.
